Hop Aero has officially unveiled a new hypersonic cargo rocket named Rook.
The vehicle is designed to launch from a standard 40-foot shipping container, rather than a conventional launch pad.
It is also built to land on unprepared ground, removing the need for traditional runways altogether.
What it can carry, and how fast
Rook has a payload capacity of 550 pounds.
The rocket is designed to travel 450 miles within a flight time of around 15 minutes, flying a suborbital arc before re-entering the atmosphere at hypersonic speed.
Hop Aero has cited a delivery route between Okinawa and Taiwan as a reference mission for that flight time.
Who it is built for
The company intends Rook for delivering both medical and military supplies.
Hop Aero, based in Orange County, California, is targeting contested military logistics as well as commercial customers facing costly downtime, citing losses of up to two million dollars an hour in industries such as manufacturing and offshore oil.
A young company at an early stage
Hop Aero was founded in 2024 by Matija Milenovic and Jacob Balaj, and is part of Y Combinator's Summer 2026 startup batch.
The six-person team has so far completed one tethered test of a small-scale prototype at a spaceport in Oklahoma, and Rook itself has not yet flown.
Its main government backing to date is a $1.25 million contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory, awarded in September 2025 and due to expire in October.
What the vehicle looks like
Rook is a vertical, cylindrical white spacecraft with a rounded nose cone, small stabilising fins near the top, and a dark window or hatch section in its midsection.
It stands on multi-legged landing gear at its base, roughly six metres tall in total.
Whether the vehicle can move from a rendered concept and a single tethered test to routine hypersonic deliveries remains, for now, an open engineering question rather than a demonstrated capability.
