Instagram limits reach for profiles that use AI-generated people but do not self-label

The Meta-owned social media giant will start penalising accounts that present AI-generated people as real by renaming its profile badge and reducing the distribution of unlabelled profiles.

Instagram is stepping up enforcement against synthetic personas that look like real people, saying accounts that feature AI-generated people must identify themselves or face penalties.

The company will rename the voluntary "AI creator" badge to an explicit AI-generated profile label and will hunt down accounts that fail to self-label. Accounts the platform flags can have their posts de-prioritised, they will not be recommended to non-followers in Reels and Explore, effectively a limit reach penalty, and owners can appeal decisions.

Instagram said the change responds to people finding a profile that “seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated,” in a blog post. The company also clarified that people who use AI tools to create content do not need the profile-level badge for ordinary AI-assisted posts.

This is a shift from labelling individual pieces of synthetic media to signalling and enforcing at the account level, a pattern platforms have been edging toward as AI-generated influencers have grown harder to spot. The move keeps imitation personas on the service but gives Instagram a lever to reduce their discovery rather than remove them outright.

For users, the change means one clearer label for accounts built around synthetic people; for advertisers and creators, it is a new enforcement category to watch as appeals and detection decisions play out.
