The war in Ukraine has shifted, in the view of a leading technologist, from attrition to a contest over industrialised innovation.
Eric Schmidt, the former Google chief, told Sky News the conflict had entered an 'ominous' shift and warned the winner will be the side that scales innovation fastest.
Strategic, not rhetorical
Battlefield advances in autonomy, sensors and targeting are now being produced and iterated at industrial pace, and that raises the stakes from isolated technical novelty to mass effects on logistics, reconnaissance and strike tempo.

Warning call
Schmidt has carried the warning into print as well; he expanded the argument in The Washington Post, describing the conflict as a test of how quickly new systems can be trained, manufactured and networked into existing forces.
The wider pattern we have seen this year is not just more drones, it is data. Several governments and firms are moving to share battlefield video and telemetry so models can be trained faster.
At the same time, marketplaces and defence supply chains are being adapted to push autonomy software into tens of thousands of platforms. Those developments are why a technologist’s warning about scale matters: software and data can be copied quickly, hardware and factories less so.
What to watch next
Essentially, the crux is whether either side can turn rapid prototypes into reliable, maintainable systems at volume.
And it will focus on how partners manage the flow of battlefield data and the industrial capacity that turns models into weapons. That contest of scale is now the clearest yardstick of advantage on the battlefield.
