top 5 face search engines

We all use search engines to look for info on the day-to-day. But a text search is not always enough. What if you want to know more about an image or even search for a face that you probably have stored on your phone, but can’t remember who?

That’s when you could use advanced search engines that would help you with a reverse image search or help you specifically search for faces. Face search engines have been gaining prominence over the years because of the emerging need of face search for various purposes. Moreover, these AI-powered face search engines run with improved the accuracy, crucial for facial recognition.

Apart from recognizing faces, these search engines can also be used to identify people in group pictures or finding similar looking faces.

While the omnipotent Google image search is always there to aid you, We bring to you 5 other popular face search engines (in no particular order) that you can use for the purpose.

  1. TinEye

The best part, that comes as a disclaimer for every other site, is that TinEye does not store or save your searched images. Using TinEye is very much private as mentioned on its page.

You can upload an image or paste a URL and search for it. TinEye does not support any more search operators, making it both simpler and basic. TinEye constantly crawls the web and adds images to its index. For example, the day I wrote this piece, the the TinEye index was over 39.0 billion images.

Unlike Google, TinEye links directly to the pages where it found the images and skips similar images.

The demo version of BetaFace will give you basic details after you upload your photo, like perceived age, gender, chin shape, ethnicity & so on.

More advanced information like biometric measurements, face analysis, face & facial features tracking on video & emotion recognition is available for a price.

PimEyes is reverse face search engine. You can send a face image to PimEyes to find given person or a similar looking person. It uses modern face recognition algorithms and machine learning to generate the search results. PimEyes looks only at faces & their  compositions but not necessarily the color or haircut, for example. It does not store search data and is mostly free to use.

However, the highest match generated on PimEyes barely goes up to 70%.

The NeoFace Watch can identify faces from surveillance videos and can run a facial search from a watch list of different people. It can raise an alert whenever it discovers a similar person. However, this is a paid service.

Offered by Reddit, Karma Decay, indexes only Reddit.com, which allows it to offer better speed and features. In other words, Karma Decay allows users to search & see if an image (or a face, for that matter) has been posted on Reddit before and in what context.

While it is free to use, it is still in beta version.
