Here are some ways to market your podcast:

Start with a quality product

Firstly, it goes without saying that the standard of your recording should be as professional as possible, since no amount of advertising will assist a substandard product – so invest in some good equipment if you’re serious about your effort.

Secondly, find a good hosting platform; this is probably one of the most important aspects to consider because you are going to want to distribute your podcast to as many podcast directories as possible. Set up a branded landing page for your subscribers to visit as well as a place to list past & present episodes. Your audio player also needs to be attractive & you should be able to embed it on other Websites. You also need to have an email automation plugin or facility available to you so that you can send out notifications about new episodes & gain subscribers for your podcast. Additionally, you need to have detailed analytics so that you can gauge your success.

SEO

Search engine optimization is key – after all organic search probably results in the best subscriber conversion rate. All podcasts must have a keyword targeted title & description. It’s a good practice to engage the assistance of a keyword generating tool to get an overview of the best, easiest to rank for keywords.

Another good practice to enhance SEO is to include a transcript of the podcast on its landing page. The reason why this improves SERP is that Google, Bing & other engines don’t currently list podcasts as part of the result set unless users type in “podcast”, so without a transcription your podcast is going to get far less attention from the likes of Google. Also, if you feature a transcript you can include links to more in depth blog articles, if you have them, & this practice would not only improve your traffic it would count as valuable backlinks for your main content.

Social media

A social media presence will do wonders for your podcast marketing campaign, but it must be done right, & it must not take too much time away from your content creation.

First, if you don’t already have one, get a Facebook page for your business/podcast. Register business accounts wherever you can on social media platforms. Join groups on Facebook – whose members who might be interested in your subject.

Post links & descriptions to your Content on social media at optimized times to gain listeners. Timing is everything on social media. Get help to ensure that you institute great social media campaigns.

Some podcast hosting platforms allow users to auto-post to their social media. This is a great asset if you can get it, some even have audio players that you can embed directly on social media. Tools that assist in creating posts, scheduling them for the best posting times & increasing your followers are great marketing assets, apps such as Tailwinds ( for Instagram & Pinterest) & Meet Edgar (for others), can help enormously, & free up your time for better content creation.

Repurpose Content

Use your podcasts to make videos for YouTube, Instagram, Facebook & Tik Tok. Use them as a starting point to create blog posts. Create Soundbites (audio snippet teases) & post them wherever you can. Leverage your friends, employees & family members to follow your Content. If you feature businesses, startups, bloggers or any other 3rd parties on your podcast, give them a shout-out before you broadcast, they may feature you on their Website or social media, they might even subscribe.

Directories

Make sure you have an RSS feed for your episodes, & that it’s picked up by all the major directories such as :

  1. Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes)
  2. Google Podcasts
  3. Spotify
  4. Stitcher
  5. Podchaser
  6. TuneIn
  7. iHeartRadio
  8. Pandora

Good podcast hosting Sites allow users to submit to most of these directories via an inbuilt RSS feed.

In conclusion: By now you may have realized that merely starting a podcast is not the end of it. In fact, it is the start of a journey. Your marketing has to be strong & consistent for your podcast to become popular.
