Pew Research says Facebook No: 1 with US teens but Instagram & Snapchat not far behind

New survey by American research body Pew Research Center has shown that while social network Facebook still remained numero uno of the social media scene, youngsters were also diversifying their social platforms.

While 71% of the 1000 respondents agreed to using Facebook, a big chunk also said they used photo-sharing app Instagram, while 41% used pic-based messaging app Snapchat.

More than half, 56% of teens — defined in this report as those ages 13 to 17 — said they went Online several times a day, & 12% reported once-a-day use. Just 6% of teens reported going Online weekly, & 2% go Online less often.

The report said 71% of teens polled said they used more than 1 social network site out of the 7 platform options they were given. Among the 22% of teens who only used 1 site, 66% used Facebook, 13% used Google+, 13% used Instagram & 3% used Snapchat.

This study used a somewhat different method than Pew Research Center’s previous reports on teens. While both were probability-based, nationally representative samples of American teens, the current survey was administered Online, while its previous work involved surveying teens over the phone

Some of the survey’s highlights include:

73% of teens had or have access to a smartphone;

91% of teens go Online using a mobile device;

24% of teens said they go Online “almost constantly”

The survey also threw up other interesting highlights: Boys, for example, were more likely than girls to report that they visited Facebook most often – 45% of boys vs. 36% of girls. Girls were more likely than boys to say they used Instagram – 23% of girls vs. 17% of boys & Tumblr – 6% of girls compared with less than 1% of boys.

Older teens aged 15 to 17 were more likely than younger teens to cite Facebook – 44% vs. 35% of younger teens, Snapchat (13% vs. 8%) & Twitter (8% vs. 3%) as a most often used platform, while younger teens aged 13 to 14 were more likely than their older compatriots to list Instagram (25% vs. 17% of older teens) as a platform they visited most often, said the Pew survey.
