Keep Cloud files secure with Box Shield

Box, an Online file sharing & Cloud Content management service, recently announced a set of security controls in private beta for select customers.

The Box Shield, a machine learning-based security platform was launched in August last year.

The new controls detect when data hosted by the Cloud-based service is accidentally shared or misused as it travels inside & outside of an organization.

Since large business move data & operations to the Cloud, employees store information & collaborate on the projects – all on the Cloud. Keeping this in mind, the Shield aims to better secure Cloud-based Content.

Box’s goal is to simplify security without slowing processes or change the way people around the world use the Cloud.

The company provides more than 8 million users with secure Cloud Content management and collaboration.

The new tools will enable Enterprises to receive intelligence alerts & unlock insights into their Content security with new capabilities built natively in Box.

The Box Shield has 3 basic functions:

  1. With Smart Access, the IT can classify files according the access rights given to an employee. IT admins can classify these files according to their level of confidentiality and apply policies based on those classifications.
  2. The Anomaly Detection tool will help IT discover compromised accounts & identify access abuse. For example, if an end user accesses his account from a questionable location or downloads large data files, Box Shield will flag that as risky behavior and alert the IT department.
  3. The Content Firewall feature can go beyond two-factor authentication to verify external users & check the security of devices.

Box can easily be integrated with 3rd-party platforms like Google, Slack, Microsoft & Okta. The company is in the process of identifying places where Box Shield can integrate with other Cloud access security broker (CASB) services, where customers with an existing security information management tool will be able to use the Shield.

Box Shield, with all its new controls & tools will be generally available in the fall.
