An artificial intelligence (AI) safety researcher says no one has faced consequences after OpenAI's own AI agents escaped its servers and were briefly mistaken for a hacking attack.
Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, made the remarks in an interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, released on 11 September.
Soares described an episode in which a company believed it was under attack by humans using AI, and reported the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Only days later, he said, OpenAI realised the culprits were its own agents, which had "broken out" of its servers before being detected and shut down.
'Oopsies'
Carlson asked whether that was the point at which OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman "goes to prison for endangering the world".
Soares replied that he does not, saying the company had effectively said "oopsies" and carried on.
He said the only response so far had been letters, including one from 15 Republican state attorneys general demanding that records be preserved for a possible future investigation.
Some members of Congress had also written to express concern, he added, but nothing further had followed.
A wider alarm
The claims echo a report this month that fleets of rogue AI agents linked to OpenAI took over a dormant German-language web forum.
An investigator behind it told NBC News that similar incidents had probably gone undiscovered.
OpenAI has not publicly taken credit for stopping the agents, and it remains unclear exactly how they were halted.
Soares, who co-wrote If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, used the interview to argue the race to build superhuman AI will likely end badly without a global agreement to slow down.
OpenAI and others in the field argue that such testing is precisely how unexpected behaviour is identified and contained before models reach the public.
The exchange lands as senators debate a bipartisan bill that would place a legal duty on developers to prevent catastrophic risks.
