Ubunto 15.04 to release on Apr 23, will come with new Snappy Ubuntu Core

UK-based developer of the open-source operating system (OS) Ubuntu, Canonical has announced the coming of Ubuntu 15.04. The download shall be available from April 23, 2015.

For Cloud users, explained Canonical on its official blog post, the release delivers the new, Snappy Ubuntu Core for transactional systems such as Cloud container hosts, smart devices, & a new container-based hypervisor, LXD. LXD, it added, will provide the full experience of virtual machines, the security of a hypervisor, & bare-metal performance & density. The new OS offers developers tools for Cloud, device, client & Internet of Things.

“Containers are the new frontier in virtualisation & Cloud, claimed the post.

This version of Ubuntu provides:

  • Live migration of LXD containers between hosts
  • Docker 1.5
  • Snappy Ubuntu Core

‘Snappy’ Ubuntu Core contains all the familiar code & updates of Ubuntu, but is packaged with the new ‘snappy’ system, enabling guaranteed updates with rollback for both the OS & applications installed on it. Snappy Ubuntu Core is the smallest Ubuntu available, designed for security & efficiency in devices or on the Cloud.

“Snappy Ubuntu Core offers everything developers love about Ubuntu together with transactional updates,” says Dustin Kirkland, product manager for Ubuntu Server at Canonical. “Snap packages deliver apps securely to devices and cloud hosts, with isolation of application data and the guarantee that an update can be rolled back.”
