Twitch rolls back ad guidelines – News

Twitch has backtracked on its decision to implement new rules that would have impacted the way streamers could showcase ads on the platform.

The initial rules, which banned “burned in” video, display, and audio ads, had caused an outcry among content creators as they were not consulted beforehand. OTK, a network of popular streamers, publicly criticized Twitch’s changes through an open letter. Moreover, charity streamers worried about the rules’ impact on their fundraising efforts, while esports creators feared the rules would further hinder the struggling industry’s ability to monetize broadcasts. Recognizing the backlash, Twitch issued an apology for the way the rules were introduced and promised clearer guidelines. Ultimately, Twitch has now completely revoked these rules.

Twitch’s new guidelines provoked a strong reaction from content creators who believed that the platform had deviated from its “creator-first” vision. Many creators voiced their frustration on social media, and OTK took a public stand against Twitch’s decisions. Charity streamers were concerned about the rules’ potential impact on their fundraising initiatives, while esports creators worried about the industry’s already precarious monetization prospects. Twitch expressed regret for the rollout and committed to providing greater transparency in its rules.

Nevertheless, Twitch has since decided to entirely reverse the rules. In a statement, the platform acknowledged that the guidelines were detrimental to both creators and itself. Twitch emphasized the importance of sponsorships for streamers’ growth and income and assured that it would not hinder streamers from establishing direct relationships with sponsors or maintaining control over their sponsorship endeavors. The platform aims to collaborate with its community to optimize the Twitch experience and pledges to communicate its actions and intentions clearly.

The rescinding of these rules represents a triumph for Content creators who felt their concerns were not being heard by Twitch.
