Microsoft Updates Paint – Software

Microsoft is rolling out an update for the Paint app to Windows Insiders, specifically those in the Canary and Dev Channels.

This update, version 11.2308.18.0 or higher, brings support for layers and transparency to the Paint app. Users can now add, remove, and manage layers on the canvas, allowing for the creation of richer and more complex digital art. By stacking shapes, text, and other image elements on top of each other, users can create unique compositions.

To access the new layer functionality, users can click on the Layers button in the toolbar, which will open a panel on the side of the canvas. From there, new layers can be added and the order of layers can be changed, affecting the arrangement of image elements on the canvas. Users also have the ability to show or hide individual layers, duplicate them, or merge them together.

In addition to layers, the update also introduces support for transparency. When working with a single layer, a checkerboard pattern on the canvas indicates the transparent portions of the image. Erasing content from the canvas now truly removes the content instead of painting over it with white. When working with multiple layers, erasing content on one layer reveals the content in the layers beneath. By combining layers, transparency, and other tools in Paint, users can create exciting and dynamic images and artwork. The new background removal feature can be particularly useful in creating interesting layered compositions.
