Most ecommerce marketers focus on growing their list, & it’s easy to see why — each new customer gives you another chance to make a sale. On the other hand, keep in mind that existing customers are much more likely to convert than new leads.

While customer acquisition is obviously an important component of any e-commerce marketing campaign, don’t forget to use upselling & cross-selling to increase conversions and order values among your current customers. These are both incredibly valuable tools for e-commerce vendors when used correctly.

Affiliate marketing is another recent trend in e-commerce & other areas, & it connects you with an existing audience that’s already closely connected to the affiliate. You can take advantage of the affiliate’s authority to do some of the work involved in growing your list and maintaining customer relationships.

Just as effective cross-selling requires you to identify relevant products, you’ll need to look for the right affiliates to endorse your brand. Their audience should broadly align with yours on important criteria like age, income, & gender. Don’t assume you’ll get clicks simply by paying the first affiliate marketer you find.

You should also speak to potential affiliates about themselves & why they’re the best option for your brand. Fit is one of the most important considerations in affiliate marketing.

Before committing to an affiliate, do some research to determine what you’ll pay for each new customer & whether it’s a cost-effective option. Think about whether it makes more sense to pay a commission or flat fee, & consider the value of affiliate leads compared to leads from other sources. Continue using analytics to monitor your cost per click & cost per conversion across different marketing channels.
