“Blackbox” is Chrome extension that makes it easy to copy on screen text from videos

The foundations of software are ever shifting, developers, no matter their education, constantly need to keep abreast of new technology, new languages, frameworks & methods of doing things. Being a developer means a life of constant learning. As a result they’re often found watching coding videos, which seems to be the most popular method of teaching these days. The problem with this is that if the code is demonstrated on video & there’s no accompanying, written, tutorial, it might be difficult to replicate the example.

As a response to this problem, developer Richard Rizk has developed a browser extension, which allows users to copy any on-screen text at the click of a button. This option is an amazing assistance to any developer who might be short of time & doesn’t want to re-watch sections of the video or put it on pause while they attempt to replicate, often, complex coding procedures.

The extension, which is available for desktop, is easy to install & simple to use.

Download the crx file for Blackbox, open Chrome’s extensions page (chrome://extensions/ or find by Chrome menu icon, More tools, Extensions), & then drag-and-drop the file to the extensions page to install it. Once the extension is installed users only need to click on a button to copy the on screen code while watching a video online.

The extension has clocked up over 200,000 downloads, which goes to show just how necessary it is. Naturally, although this extension is aimed at developers it is useful for anyone who might want to copy instructions from a video, including DIY enthusiasts, sewers, pattern designers, or anyone else who needs to keep a written copy of on-screen instructions.
