They came on Friday, a time when, with the weekend approaching, people are busying tweeting, posting on their fav social network or simply browsing. But much of that activity along the United States East & even the West coasts came to a halt because of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. From Spotify & Reddit to the New York Times, the attack started around 7 am Eastern Time & was aimed at Dyn, an Internet infrastructure company headquartered in New Hampshire. It’s a Cloud-based Internet Performance Management company that ensures networks & apps are working to an optimum.

That got resolved in 2 hours but a 2nd attack started just before noon. Dyn reported a 3rd wave of attacks a little after 4 pm ET. In all cases, traffic to Dyn’s Internet directory servers throughout the US, mostly on the East Coast but later on the opposite coast, too, was halted by a flood of malicious requests from millions of IP addresses disrupting the system.
Dyn later described it as a “very sophisticated and complex attack.” Till the time of writing, the attacks were still on.
What’s a DDos attack?
Simply put, it is an attempt to make a service on the Net unavailable by launching a series, in fact, millions, of attempts to log in, thus overwhelming that company’s servers, leading to downtime. This also involves the use of bots. The idea is to deny service, hence the name, Distributed Denial of Service or DDos.
