A crowdfunding campaign is being launched on Indiegogo by Spanish startup Arkyne, to bring ‘Bioo lite’, the 1st ‘green’ charger, to market. It’s a small biotech device which is embedded on a plant pot that outputs electricity using a panel that functions as a bio battery. Besides the small panel, which is 21X21X11 cm in size, the system includes water purification, automatic irrigation & 2 to 3 full daily charges for a mobile phone, & works during both day & night.

You can define biotech as the use of living organisms to produce products & services. With this in mind, & using plants as its inspiration, this startup has proven that it can generate electricity efficiently & cheaply. According to Arkyne, the system can generate 3-40 watts per square meter using its vegetable panel & bio battery, which make use of the residual bio-energy, output by the plant’s unused waste, which is organic matter. The range of power output is pretty wide & its value depends on the type of plant used & on the cares that it receives.

They also claim that this tech is way ahead of other similar systems, some of which are also in a conceptual stage of development. Bioo is based on tech developed by NASA & produces 10X more power than its competition. It has already received seed money & is doing well in its initial crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, on which it has already exceeded its initial fixed goal. The company plans on developing much larger panels in the near future (1X1 m), which can be used on backyard or rooftop gardens (green roofs). A 100 m2 turf or small plant plot should be enough to power a typical residential flat or house.

Bioo was 1st announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, & the lite plant-pot device is now available on pre-order if you get onboard with their cowdfunding campaign. Arkyne is made up of a group of very young scientists & engineers & is itself based in Barcelona. It is specialized in renewable energy & nanotech, telecoms hardware, videogames & the development of AI systems.
