It’s up now (updated). The ‘Fail Whale’ is sighted after Twitter goes down

Update: Twitter said it had rectified the glitch that had affected the service on Tuesday. In a status update at 1800 GMT (1 p.m. EST), Twitter said an “intermittent issue affecting some users” was related to “an internal code change.”

“We reverted the change, which fixed the issue,” Twitter said in a statement. Users almost everwhere including Scandinavia & India had reported a breakdown in service. According to monitoring service, downrightnow.com, Twitter has been up & running without a problem since the last 6 hours.

After a hiatus, the ‘Fail Whale’ was sighted today. Yup, micro-blog Twitter went down early Tuesday for many users around the world.

Clearly the problem is serious since access to Twitter began failing over the Web, mobile & even its API from 8:20am GMT. In the next couple of hours, much of service had resumed.

Twitter’s own status board confirmed the outage. It’s developer-facing monitoring confirmed that 4 of the 5 public APIs were down, suffering a “service disruption”. The site’s status though keeps moving from 1 end to the other, & even now, some of its services were still reported to be out.

…coming to the ‘Fail Whale’, in the early days of Twitter, when it would go down, mostly because of over-capacity problems, the error message that users would get got dubbed as ‘Fail Whale’.
