Coming, search by Facebook?

This is 1 situation that could prove to be a nightmare for Google. Social network Facebook may be on the cusp of releasing a search engine of its own, letting users find articles to share with their friends alongside their status updates.

According to Online reports, for the moment, users must paste in the URL of a page if they want to share it. But a tweak to its iOS app by Facebook has started throwing up an  “add a link” option, which they can click & then search for articles to share.

What could be very, very worrisome for Google also is the fact that Facebook had indexed over 1 trillion posts to power the search engine, looking through users’ feeds to find out which articles had been shared more than others, in a report in TechCrunch. That socially-powered search is likely to be the Facebook search engine’s selling point over Google, say analysts.

Clicking on the option inthe iOS app gives users a search box, in which they can type their query. They then get results sorted by their likelihood to be shared, with recently-published articles & those posted by others being prioritised. Once users select the report they want to share, they can even add things like a status update or emojis.
Initially, the feature has only been rolled out to iOS users in the US, but this is a pilot project. But the site told Techcrunch that it is “piloting a new way to add a link that’s been shared on Facebook to your posts and comments”.
