US admin issues measures to promote responsible AI – AI

The Biden-Harris administration has announced new measures to promote responsible innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) and protect the rights and safety of citizens.

The administration aims to place people and communities at the center of AI development, supporting responsible innovation that serves the public good while protecting society, security, and the economy. Companies have a fundamental responsibility to ensure the safety of their AI products before deployment or public release.

The administration has taken several steps to promote responsible innovation, including engaging with advocates, companies, researchers, civil rights organizations, not-for-profit organizations, communities, international partners, and others on critical AI issues. In February, President Biden signed an Executive Order directing federal agencies to root out bias in their design and use of new technologies, including AI, and to protect the public from algorithmic discrimination. The administration is also actively working to address national security concerns raised by AI, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, biosecurity, and safety.

To power responsible American AI research and development (R&D), the National Science Foundation is announcing $140 million in funding to launch seven new National AI Research Institutes. This investment will bring the total number of institutes to 25 across the country, extending the network of organizations involved into nearly every state. These institutes will catalyze collaborative efforts across institutions of higher education, federal agencies, industry, and others to pursue transformative AI advances that are ethical, trustworthy, responsible, and serve the public good.

Overall, the administration’s efforts aim to mitigate the risks of AI while seizing the opportunities it presents. The administration recognizes the power of AI and its potential to revolutionize many industries, but they also understand the need for responsible AI development that prioritizes public safety and rights. Through ongoing engagement with various stakeholders and investments in responsible AI research and development, the administration hopes to promote AI innovation that benefits society as a whole.
