Roblox, a multiplayer social gaming platform, has tapped into this phenomenon with great success. Recent reports point to statistics which demonstrate that players spend an incredible 1 billion hours per month, playing games on the platform & that Roblox’s user base has grown to a staggering 90 million monthly users & 15 million available games. These figures are constantly on the rise & players have increased by 20 million in the last year alone.
The factor which sets Roblox apart, & which has also contributed to its rapid growth, is that Roblox offers its platform to their players. In other words, it does not design or conceptualize games but leaves that to their community. However, they provide all the tools necessary for players to make & market their own games within the social network.
Additionally, Roblox has introduced new languages to its platform, such as French & German, which has also catapulted the user base, especially in Europe. The top 150 games are now offered in these European languages in addition to English. The company is determined to introduce more European languages in the near future, so as to further fuel its rise in popularity.
Revenue for the company is created through sharing in the sales of virtual goods generated by the games, while games such as Heist2, Ski Resort & Crash Course provide an income of more than $30 million annually for their creators— Roblox predicts that this figure will double in the coming year. The company which raised over $150 million in a series F funding round in 2017, is seeking to raise further capital to fund their expansion plans in Europe.
Other platform enhancements that have led to Roblox’s success include, dedication to safety & strict user rules, which ensure a pleasant experience for all users. The company is a member of the Fair Play Alliance, which monitors game users across multiple platforms, & prevents users acting in a ‘toxic’ manner while Online.
