‘Pikazo’, an app that paints a masterpiece with your mobile photos – New app

pikazoWith this app called ‘Pikazo’, you can take any photo & turn it into a compelling visual piece of art. The tech behind Pikazo employs neural networks on the Cloud, emulating how your brain works, to rip apart & assemble image details into something new & extraordinary.

As its name implies, you can run your photo through the app, sort of like an Instagram filter, & at the other end, you’re returned a ‘painted’ version that looks like the famed Spanish painter has gone to work on it. There’s a whole bunch more styles that can be applied, like Van Gogh, Klimt, a Star Wars poster style & a lot more. You can even combine photos & different styles to get weird, original mashups, the possibilities seem endless, but the actual results can be hit or miss. The app was developed by Karl Stiefvater in St.Louis, Missouri, USA, with a lot of help from Google Labs’ Artificial Neural Networks developers, in fact it looks like a less trippy, more artsy version of the Google–sponsored Deep Dream app.   Other heavy hitters were also involved in the app’s development: from the University of Tübingen, Stanford University & from Oxford University.

But probably the biggest name of the bunch is founder Karl Stiefvater himself. He is reportedly a very talented artist, having worked as image scientist in gaming & virtual world legends like Myst & Second Life, & in Hollywood landmark films like Matrix & 300. He is famous for blowing up Neo’s spaceship in Matrix 2 & for the scene where the guy gets thrown into the pit in 300.
