Last year, Twitch’s audience watched nearly 1.35 trillion minutes of video content, far more than on any other streaming platform. However, the number of active streamers on Twitch has continued falling.

According to data presented by CasinosEnLigne.com, the total number of Twitch streamers plunged by more than 1.5 million in 2022.

A Massive 2.86 million Drop Since 2021 Peak

As the world’s largest community for gamers, Twitch has been leading the audience in live broadcasts for years. During 2018 and 2019, the streaming platform had between three and four million streamers, according to Statista and Twitch Tracker data.

But the explosive growth of the entire gaming industry in 2020 created a massive space for new streamers, with their total number more than doubling by the end of that year. In January 2021, Twitch hit an all-time high with close to 9.9 million streamers, still it was downhill from there.

Statistics show the number of streamers dropped by a massive 1.33 million in 2021 only, and the negative trend continued last year. In January 2022, there were 8.56 million streamers on Twitch, deep below an all-time high seen in the same month a year before.

However, the number of streamers dropped by another 1.53 million by the end of 2022. Statistics show the number of people streaming on Twitch decreased by a huge 2.86 million compared to an all-time peak in January 2021.

Total Time Spent Watching Twitch Content Down by 15% Year-over-Year

Besides a massive drop in the number of streamers, the world’s largest community for gamers has also seen a considerable decrease in the total time spent watching streaming content.

Last year, Twitch audiences watched nearly 1.35 trillion minutes of video content on the streaming platform or 15% less than a year before.

Nevertheless, this was still more than double the time spent in 2019, when viewers watched around 660 billion minutes of Twitch content.

The TwitchTracker data show the monthly average number of Twitch viewers also dropped year-over-year. In December 2021, this figure stood at 2.51 million and dropped to 2.23 million a year later.

The average number of channels decreased from 90,628 in December 2021 to 82,484 in December last year.
