LG’s revolutionary folding screen coming to smartphones soon – Digital lifestyle

LG Chem has developed a revolutionary new foldable display material using state-of-the-art material technologies. The material, which is called “Real Folding Window”, is as hard as glass, but has folding areas that are as flexible as plastic.

The “Real Folding Window” is meant to protect a folding device from the trauma associated with impact & needs to be durable as well as flexible. LG Chem says that the material is thin, crack-resistant & significantly improves the fold lines currently seen in the folding area of these devices. They have applied specially developed coating materials of a few dozen micrometers onto a PET film, which is a thin plastic, to make the surface as hard as glass, while the folding parts remain as flexible as plastic. This method enhances the heat-resistance of the “Real Folding Window” & improves its mechanical properties.

The new fabric is thinner than tempered glass of the same hardness, but it’s far more resilient & crack-resistant making it suitable for a digital device’s screen since it will stand up to punishing wear. Additionally, the material folds both inwards & outwards, which is a marked improvement on currently available covers that are optimized for the in-folding method only.
