In search of truth, Google style

It’s made the headlines on the Internet. Google is working on a plan to rank search results based on valid facts contained in the Content. The search engine’s researchers put out a paper in February this year which outlined progress on this approach.

If Google ultimately adopts this method & tweaks its search algorithms, needless to say, the world of search as we know it, is bound to change forever. Under the proposed plan, factual validity will contribute more to a page’s search ranking. At present, the biggest factor is how many other external pages link to the Web page in question. It is, however, felt that this isn’t always the correct way to measure quality content. Correctness or the right facts have nothing to do with the number of links connecting to a page. The Google research team wants to revise the current system to look for inaccuracies instead of links.

The research paper by the Google team explains: The quality of Web sources has been traditionally evaluated using exogenous signals such as the hyperlink structure of the graph. We propose a new approach that relies on endogenous signals, namely, the correctness of factual information provided by the source. A source that has few false facts is considered to be trustworthy. So, in a sense, Google search will be more truth-oriented as & when the new algorithm comes into play.
