Facebook and Instagram to Cease News Availability in Canada, Complying with Online News Act – News

To comply with the Online News Act, Meta has commenced the process of terminating news availability in Canada. These changes take effect today and will be gradually implemented for all individuals accessing Facebook and Instagram in Canada over the following weeks.

For Canadian news outlets, this implies that news links and Content posted by news publishers and broadcasters in Canada will no longer be viewable by people in the country. The company is identifying news outlets based on legislative definitions and guidance from the Online News Act.

For international news outlets, they will retain the ability to post news links and Content on the platforms; however, this Content will not be visible to people in Canada.

For the Canadian community, this means that individuals in Canada will no longer have the option to view or share news Content on Facebook and Instagram, including news articles and audio-visual Content posted by news outlets.

For the international community, there will be no changes to the services for people accessing the technologies outside of Canada. They will still be able to access and interact with news Content as before.
