Amazon reinvent

There was a score of announcements made at the Amazon conference –AWS ‘re:Invent 2018, including a deep dive archival storage system & a Microsoft Windows file server.

Here are the details:

The S3 Glacier Deep Archive is being touted by Amazon as a new storage class. Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) is designed for long-term data archival. Amazon says it is the lowest cost storage from any Cloud provider. It’s priced from just $0.00099/GB, a month. Data can be retrieved in 12 hours or less, & there will also be a bulk retrieval option that will allow you to inexpensively retrieve even petabytes of data within 48 hours.

The Amazon FSx for Windows File Server was designed from the ground up to work with your existing Windows applications & environments, making lift-and-shift of your Windows workloads to the Cloud super-easy. What users will get is a native Windows file system backed by fully-managed Windows file servers, accessible via the widely adopted SMB (Server Message Block) protocol. Built on SSD storage, Amazon FSx for Windows File Server delivers the throughput, IOPS, & consistent sub-millisecond performance.
