A Denmark-based team has created the first gender neutral artificial intelligence (AI) voice called Q. It was unwrapped at the South by Southwest (SXSW) creative festival in Texas, USA.

According to details available on the Website, Q is a product of close collaboration between Copenhagen Pride, Virtue, Equal AI, Koalition Interactive and thirtysoundsgood.

Explaining the rationale for Q,  the team explained that technology companies often choose to gender technology believing it will make people more comfortable adopting it. “Unfortunately this reinforces a binary perception of gender, and perpetuates stereotypes that many have fought hard to progress.

“As society continues to break down the gender binary, recognising those who neither identify as male nor female, the technology we create should follow.”

Q comes at a time when almost all the leading digital assistants such as Apple’s Siri, the Amazon Alexa & Microsoft’s Cortana are normally women voices. The team recorded the voices of 22 transgender and non-binary people as a basis for the voice.
