‘WhatRuns’ is free browser extension that instantly surfaces the tech that runs a Website

With this free browser extension for Chrome & Firefox you can identify developer tools, WordPress plugins, ad networks, etc, that form the basis of any Website you visit. The plugin also lets you follow Websites so you’ll be notified when they add or remove technologies.

WhatRuns is an excellent way for Site owners or developers to keep up with what competitors or potential partners are doing in their industry. You’ll be kept up to date on what other sites are doing, and who knows, you might hit upon a winning combination.

The extension is based on a proprietary pattern recognition algorithm that can efficiently detect every component behind a Website, including frameworks, scripts, even the newest Web tech & plugins used in any site. It’s got an easy to use, clean user interface, & according to Co-founder Jijo Sunny, whatruns differentiates itself from the competition because:

  • It detects tens of thousands of WordPress plugins & themes, fonts & even SaaS apps with very little adoption
  • Its follow feature lets you keep track of technology stacks & get notified when other sites adopt or ditch technologies
  • Better UI & very lightweight
  • Great accuracy

WhatRuns gives away the extension & its business model is based on selling lists of Websites with particular technologies, so they perform competitive intelligence tasks on demand. As Jijo Sunny states in another Site, they’re also planning on introducing a “predictive sales system which will suggest clients based on their technology adoption. For eg., if a company migrates to Magento, they are a potential client to Magento extension developers”.

WhatRuns is based in London, UK & can really be a great source of inspiration, especially for formulating how you’re going to prepare your site’s back end.
