Use simple notes on your Android phone with ‘Material Notes’ – New app

Free note-taking apps for Android abound but they’re often so feature heavy & complex that the UI gets in the way of you doing any actual work. If you want a simple, no-hassle app with an uncomplicated interface that’s just good at adding & managing notes on your phone you might want to give ‘Material Notes’ a try.

Material Notes is a fully offline app, so if you don’t want companies like Google or Evernote, just to mention 2 of the most popular (& powerful) players in this space, to be able to mine your data, then you should check it out. It doesn’t do anything in the cloud and you don’t have to sync anything if you don’t want to.

The app is ad-free, works with rich Content & you can have notes containing lists, headings, quotes & a lot more. The text elements on your notes have markdown support, so you can use plain text formatting that can easily be viewed & converted to HTML.

It has a simplistic, straightforward user interface & the user experience is derived from modern material design standards. Different colors can be assigned to any individual note. A night mode can be used to view your notes, so you’ll be able to see them easier in the dark.

Other interesting features of Material Notes are: You can switch between 2 note layouts – Grid & List; There’s support for tagging your notes as favorites & for archiving them; Support for locking notes by using a pincode; Support for floating heads, so you can quickly take notes while you’re doing other stuff on your smartphone.

Material Notes is a free open source project led by Indian-born software engineer Bijoy Singh Kochar, who is currently based in England. The app is hosted on GitHub here & available on the Google Play Store here for free. Bijoy’s Maubis App group have developed other apps also available on Google Play, like File Manager, Clipboard Manager, Movie Charades & Lighthouse.
