What is Google Discover & how to use it? – e-Why, What & How

Google Discover finds customized Content for users. Here’s how to use it & be included in the curation trail.

Discover from Google creates opportunities for both Content creators & consumers. For creators, Discover offers the chance to find new readers & improve traffic flow, authority & monetization of Web Content. For the average user, Google serves a feed of relevant articles tailored to preference, so consumers can find fresh, new content that they might otherwise miss.

Google differentiates Discover from search in that for search the user must enter a search term, for Discover the content is curated according to your activity.

For Consumers

To view your Discover feed from Google, head over to your Chrome or Google app (you can also view on google.com) & below the search bar you’ll see a number of articles. If you don’t see them, then you’ve turned off Google’s ability to curate for you & you can change this in your Settings.

If you’d like to assist Google in the effort to offer you preferred Content, then you can offer suggestions about what you want to see on your Google Account under the Activity Tab. Under Web & App activity users can add their search & app usage history by checking the relevant tabs.

Also, above the feed Google includes a feedback box, which users can engage with to help Google’s AI “understand” if you consider their selection useful. Users can rate the Content on a sliding scale (excellent – bad).

For Content Creators

If you create for the Web there’s an opportunity to get your Content in front of millions of users, & if they like what they see your viewers & visitors could increase exponentially; you might even acquire daily followers.

What do Content creators need to do

The most obvious thing is that creators must concentrate on producing quality information that answers questions. If creators focus on supplying answers they will find engagement.

Google has set out guidelines for creators & these are some of the things that can be done to improve the chance of being included on Discover.

The most important factor to consider is to see that your content is indexed by Google since all indexed items are automatically eligible for Discover. To see if you’re indexed, set up Google Tag Manager for your site, then head over to Google Search Console to view your performance. Content must also comply with Google’s policies & you can view these here.

Content for Discover is curated by Google in much the same way as that for Search indexing –  find a list here.

Google works on a scoring system for content that is measured on the premise of expertise, authoritativeness, & trustworthiness (E-A-T). To improve E-A-T : –

  1. Do not use clickbait type title & see that your title expresses what the article or Content is about.
  2. Use high-quality images – 1200px wide set to  max-image-preview:large setting.
  3. Do not use misleading titles, images or descriptions of content. Transparency is vital.
  4. Provide Content that is current & update regularly.

Make sure that your Site provides an RSS or Atom feed so that Google can find your content easily (here’s how to get one if you don’t have it)  Also it’s a good practice to link to your feed from your home page.

In the near future, Google plans to provide the option for Discover users to follow your Website. The feature is, currently, experimental & Google is testing it in a few English speaking countries like the US. Once this feature becomes the standard Content creators might find additional value if they’re included in Google Discover.

To conclude, Content creators should work at improving their overall SEO & optimize their Sites because it will be massively beneficial to feature on users’ home Google page.
