Taking off from where 1st version left – Blackphone 2 promises best in privacy & security

Early last year, we wrote about this phone that allowed people to make highly secure phone calls. Well, Silent Circle has launched its new Blackphone 2 next-generation smartphone that promises to deliver best in class privacy & security while offering all the features & functionality of the latest smartphones on the market.

Blackphone 2 has been launched as the 1st component of Silent Circle’s Enterprise Privacy Platform (EPP) that was announced earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress.

EPP is Silent Circle’s proposed Cloud-based combination of software, services & devices that will connect to existing Internet connections to enable privacy at every level of business. As part of this platform, Blackphone 2 provides full device encryption through the company’s Silent OS – an enhanced Android OS.

Silent OS offers encrypted & secure voice calls, conference calling, video conferencing, secure text & file transfers, all through one simple app. The in-built Security Center enables the user to easily manage privacy & security settings. You can customize permissions for each individual app & the data it has access to. You can build separate, secure environments for critical business data, personal information & even social applications within the same device.

As far as the specs are concerned, Blackphone 2 runs on an Octa-core Qualcomm processor, with 3GB RAM & 32GB of internal storage, plus a removable Micro SD card slot if you need more space. The display is a 5.5″ Gorilla Glass display, & the phone also has a 13-megapixel camera.

Blackphone 2 is priced at US $799 (RRP), which is a bit steep for your regular smartphone user. It’s no surprise that the company is pushing it as a device that is part of a high-end enterprise platform of software, devices & services.

“It is not about candy-colors, emoji keyboards, curved screens or ‘the next big thing. It’s about security, privacy & protecting your digital life, plain & simple,” said Mike Janke, Co-founder & Chairman of Silent Circle, in a statement.

Silent Circle is also hoping that the breakthrough success of their original Blackphone device as the world’s 1st privacy-optimized smartphone. The huge amount media hype (it was named one of Time Magazine’s “Top 25 Best Inventions of 2014) the original Blackphone generated will no doubt help build similar interest in Blackphone 2, although it’s difficult to say anything about enterprise adoption at this point since the rets of their platform is still under development.

Geneva, Switzerland -based SGP Technologies SA, a joint venture between Silent Circle & Geeksphone, is the manufacturer of Blackphone. Silent Circle was co-founded by former Navy SEAL Mike Janke & best-selling author Phil Zimmermann in 2012. The company had raised US $80 million through 2 funding rounds.
