Stay abreast of Facebook’s photo tagging options

Understand how photo tags and mentions work, how to add or remove tags, and where to adjust Facebook’s controls so photos with you appear as you want.

Facebook’s photo tagging is useful — it links people in images to profiles so friends know who’s pictured — but it can also affect your privacy or reputation if you don’t want certain photos associated with you. The good news: you can control who tags you, who sees those tags, and whether tags appear on your profile.

How tagging works (and how to tag someone)

There are two common ways people add names to images on Facebook. One is by typing @ + a person’s name in a post or comment; that creates a mention and links to their profile. The other is adding a tag directly to a photo itself. Many photo tools include a tag tool — often an icon that lets you click a face or place a label on the image — and Facebook will suggest names from your friends list as you type.

If you want to tag someone, you can either mention them in the text or use the photo’s tag tool to attach their name to a specific face. If you’re the owner of the photo or the post, you control adding tags to your own content; people can add tags to images they post unless your settings restrict that.

Control who tags you and what others see

Facebook provides a few settings that let you manage tags and visibility. Exact menu names and locations can change, but look in Settings for sections labelled Timeline & Tagging, Privacy, or similar. Key controls to look for:

- Tag review: turn this on if you want to approve tags before they appear on your profile or timeline. With it off, tags may appear immediately; with it on, you’ll get a notification and can accept or decline. - Who can see posts you’re tagged in: you can usually limit the audience (Friends, Friends except…, Only me, Custom lists, etc.), so a tagged post doesn’t automatically become public to everyone. - Who can tag you: some settings let you limit tagging to friends only or restrict who can add tags that link to your profile. - Face recognition and suggestions: there may be an option that helps Facebook identify people in photos to suggest tags. If you’re uncomfortable with automatic suggestions, look for a control to disable it.

If someone tags you in a photo and you don’t want it associated with your profile, you can remove the tag. You can also ask the person who posted the photo to delete the image. If a photo breaches the service’s rules or is abusive, you can report it for review.

A couple of practical tips

- Check your Activity Log or profile review area regularly — it lists posts and tags involving you so nothing slips by unnoticed. - Use audience selectors when you post photos to control who can see them and who might be tempted to tag widely. - Periodically revisit tagging and privacy settings. Social platforms change their menus and features, and a quick scan ensures your preferences still match what you want.

Tagging makes photos more social and searchable, but it doesn’t have to reduce your control. A few minutes spent setting reviews, audience limits and tag preferences will keep your photos and profile behaving the way you want.
