Start of a new era for Wi-Fi – News

Wi-Fi 6

A new Wi-Fi era is coming. Just past the 20th anniversary of Wi-Fi, the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has announced Wi-Fi 6, the newest generation of Wi-Fi connectivity, had touched “a milestone” today with official certification. The WBA is a not-for-profit industry body for the Wi-Fi ecosystem whose members include BT, AT&T and Google.

In a press statement sent to Whats New On The Net, the WBA said this was the start of Wi-Fi 6 becoming mainstream.

Until now, Wi-Fi 6 had been the domain of pioneers & pilots, including some of its members like Korea Telekom, SK Telekom, Cisco & Boingo Wireless. With the launch of Wi-Fi 6 CERTIFIED, a much larger volume of wireless operators & Enterprises will be more confident investing in the latest version devices & infrastructure, which ultimately benefits businesses & consumers, claimed the WBA

WBA said it foresaw service providers & likely early adopters like venues & the hospitality & the retail sectors exploring their options with Wi-Fi 6.  The non-profit said there were still “some things to watch out for & challenges to be addressed – it won’t necessarily be a straight rip-and-replace of existing equipment, as there will need to be some more planning & re-configuring to tackle the opportunity optimally.”  To ensure a smooth adoption, it had, thus, set in place the Wi-Fi 6 Deployment Guidelines.
