‘Smashy Brick’ seems like yesteryear’s arcade game ‘Breakout’ on steroids

If you’re an old-timer you may remember the ‘Breakout’ arcade game from the 70s & 80s, if not don’t sweat it, because this popular game, though similar conceptually, is technologically up to date, which makes for a more engaging & entertaining experience than its predecessor, especially since you don’t have to go to the arcade to enjoy it, as it’s available for free on both the iPhone & Android platforms.

Smashy Bricks is pretty addictive & simple to get started with, & has been gaining rapidly in popularity on mobile platforms. It basically consists on breaking bricks, where you draw trampolines to bounce “smashies” at brick formations. The aim is to help “Flamey” & his friends destroy the galaxy, brick by brick. It has 90 levels, which have been hand crafted by the game’s development team & 12 unique characters.

The game was released in December of 2015 by Bulldozer Games, a small team of students from the University of Washington in Seattle, & Smashy Bricks is actually their 1st try at releasing a game. Tyler Brown, one of the lead developers on the team has commented elsewhere online that inspiration for the game came from a mini game inside Super Mario 64 for the DS, where you draw little trampolines for Mario to jump around. Tyler, together with Nick Kaman, developed the idea further, combining it with the classical Breakout game to come up with the concept embodied in Smashy Bricks.

Although the basic game is free, 5 different in-app purchases are available to enhance your game-playing experience, basically consisting in 5 different game characters that can be had from US$ 0.99 to 2.99.

You cat get Smashy Bricks at the Apple Store here (it requires iOS 6.0 or later & is compatible with iPhone, iPad, & iPod touch)
