Smartphone sales in Africa fall in 2022 – News

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the smartphone market in Africa decreased by 18% in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The downturn was caused by lower consumer spending as a result of inflation & economic uncertainty, but it wasn’t specific to Africa as smartphone shipments fell in all the world’s main countries in 2022. The global smartphone market shrank by 11.3%, according to IDC.

A total of 73.4 million units were shipped into Africa; of these, 65% were sent by the Chinese companies Tecno and Itel and the South Korean company Samsung.

Budget Chinese items dominated the freight, as evidenced by the fact that 82% of the overall smartphone shipment consisted of devices priced under $200.

The largest annual reductions, 63% & 33%, were recorded in Egypt and Tunisia, respectively.
