Prisma’s photo filters will turn your pics into artwork for free – New app

prisma1st it was Photoshop, then with the advent of smartphones, Instagram & Google’s Deep Dream, all of which made it easy to filter & share your favorite digital snapshots, & now a smartphone app has come along that lets you go a step beyond. With ‘Prisma’ you apply some outstanding (& addictive) art filters to your pics & then you can share them on your favorite social networks.

Prisma’s filters are remarkable, in that unlike Photoshop or Instagram, it doesn’t use mere ‘overlay’ filters, taking a cue from Google’s Deep Dream playbook & opting instead for neural network processing.  The overlays that are commonly employed in filters just serve to create repetitive & predictable artsy variations on photos that can be instantly recognized for the low quality imitations that they are.

With Prism’s filters you can turn your pics into any of a large gamut of styles, based on famous artists, like Kanagawa, Edvard Munch (of ‘The Scream’ fame), Hokusai, Picasso, as well as famous ornaments & patterns. As they say in their product page, Prima’s “unique combination of neural network tech & artificial intelligence (AI) helps you turn your memorable moments into timeless art”.

The app has been a hit since it was 1st introduced for iOS a few months ago, & there have been unconfirmed rumors that Facebook is looking to buy it. Now with its recent announcement of availability for Android, it’s really set to take off. In fact a lot of Android users suffered from iPhone envy because they didn’t have access to the app. Plans are also under way to have the app not only work on still pictures, but to take on video as well.

Prisma Labs, the startup behind the app, is based in Moscow, Russia.
