Over 800 mln used WeChat to send or receive gifts in new lunar year – Quick wrap

Over 800 million people used messaging app WeChat owned by Chinese technology giant Tencentto either send or receive “red” gifts commonly known as “hongbao” in the 1st 6 days of the new lunar year starting from February 4 This was up by 7% from 768 million users seen from last year, according to ZDNET.

Quoting from a post on the Sina Corp. Site, the report said the record number accounted for over 80% of WeChat’s active accounts. WeChat has over 1 billion active users.

The report added that the sending out of the traditional hongbaos had migrated heavily to mobile apps, with nearly 60% of the Chinese population adopting the approach to celebrating the New Year.
