OpenAI has recently unveiled a new capability for its AI-driven chatbot, ChatGPT Plus. Subscribers can now harness the power of the ChatGPT app to browse the web, thanks to a feature aptly named Browsing. By selecting “GPT-4” in the model switcher and opting for “Browse with Bing” from the app settings, users can explore the vast realm of information. This exciting addition is available on both the iOS and Android versions of the ChatGPT app.
OpenAI emphasizes that Browsing is particularly valuable when it comes to inquiries that surpass the confines of ChatGPT’s original training data, such as current events and diverse knowledge. Without Browsing, ChatGPT’s knowledge base is limited to information existing until 2021. With the integration of Browsing, ChatGPT evolves into a more valuable assistant, especially for research endeavors. Previously, ChatGPT lacked the ability to furnish accurate and relevant answers for questions demanding up-to-date information.
Nonetheless, some concerns arise from OpenAI’s decision to restrict Browsing to Bing as the exclusive search engine option. While OpenAI enjoys a partnership with Microsoft, a notable investor, Bing does not command a reputation for being the most exhaustive or dependable search engine. Bing has faced criticism in the past for potentially favoring Microsoft-related results and displaying a notable amount of disinformation in its top search results. By limiting users to Bing, OpenAI eliminates the choice to opt for alternative search engines in instances where Bing fails to deliver precise or pertinent information.
In addition to the Browsing feature, OpenAI has introduced an update to the ChatGPT app that allows users to swiftly access specific points in a conversation by tapping on search results. These enhancements are set to be rolled out during the course of this week.
