On-device AI will bring IoT to life: Samsung’s Dr Blake

Samsung AI Center Cambridge head Dr Andrew Blake is certain that artificial intelligence (AI) is what is going to breathe life into the Internet of Things (IoT).

In an interview put out by the Samsung Newsroom, Dr Blake has explained how AI used in IoTwill help. He says that on-device AI realises AI functions by processing AI algorithms on the device itself, without necessarily connecting to the Cloud. This is also very advantageous for privacy and personal information protection, and Online security.

According to the AI unit chief, to unlock the true capabilities of AI-powered smart devices’, one needs a combination of two things – seamlessly connected hardware and a human-centric approach to AI, above all else.

One key area is health and fitness – for example, linking exercise, food and mental wellbeing. Another is communication and memories – especially via photography and video. For that, we have to move past the academic world of prototypes working on high-powered computer systems, and get AI working in a leaner fashion – on the everyday devices that people are using.

When asked what is it that the Cambridge AI center wants to bring to consumers by using AI, Dr Blake replies that AI with a focus on human beings is about homing in on the areas of life that people really care about.
