Facebook has been really stepping up its ‘live’ streaming game recently with its Facebook Live platform, &Livestream’s Mevo video camera has partnered with the social network giant to let you step up your own game. With just 1 camera, Mevo simulates multiple ‘live’ video feeds by switching between different angles & zoom levels.

Facebook is playing catch-up to ‘live’ video feed pioneers like Meerkat & Periscope, but they seem to be taking up the challenge by combining Mevo with their Facebbok Live platform. At their annual F8 developer’s conference, Facebook announced the availability of their Live API & of their hardware partner agreement with Livestream & their innovative camera, which had already been introduced during the January 2016 CES, & was then branded as Movi.

The Mevo has a 4K sensor & ramps down the streaming feed to 1080p or 720p, using software-based zooming, to split off different parts of its visual field, cropping off different sections of the full resolution frame. This way, with the 1 camera in a single position you can have multiple simultaneous wide & tight shots. The app that comes with the camera can be used to manually switch between multiple perspectives or you can let its automatic features take over & let it switch between people in a scene based on who’s doing the talking or is more active. It also provides a simulated ‘pro’ feeling by doing periodic pans & zooms so that it looks like you have a full production studio on hand.

If you’re not into the ‘live’ stuff, Mevo can also function as a camera that you can use to record video, which you can edit & later upload just like any other video camera.  You can get it on preorder for US $399 with a $100 discount, if you order before the July shipping date.  The camera’s battery will give you 10 hours’ running time, but you can order the Mevo Pro Bundle with an external 12,000 mAh battery that gets you 10 hours, which will cost $549.

Livestream LLC is Mevo’s manufacturer. Prior to the camera announcement, its main claim to fame was its ‘live’ streaming platform that allows users to broadcast video Content with a camera & a computer through the Internet, with apps for the Web, iOS, Android & Roku. It is based in New York, USA.
