‘Moment’ is an iOS app that will automatically track & help you check how often you are on your phone on a daily basis. For those of us always on our phones, Moment allows you to set daily limits on usage & then notifies you when you’ve exceeded the limit. When you’ve exceeded the limit, the app will repeatedly send you notifications (an alert every few seconds) that block your screen & remind you to put your phone away till tomorrow.
Other than your own usage of the phone, Moment also allows you to manage your family’s screen time. You can as well set up time for the entire family to be screen free using family dinner time. You will instantly see how you & the rest of your family are doing i.e. see who has gone over their limit & who is close. It also logs the number of times you pick up your phone in a day.
Moment has a coach that assists you to learn & tune yourself on how to reduce your phone’s use. As the developer claims, “It will help you rethink your relationship with your phone one day at a time.” It also shows you which apps you are using the most.
Moment runs automatically in the background meaning you could have issues with the app draining your battery. However, the creator has designed a way to minimize the app’s impact on your battery life. It also needs to track the places you go so that it can automatically track your phone use. Although this could be an issue for some users, they developers have stipulated in their policies on how they protect your privacy.
Moment also gives you the option of easily exporting the data on your phone use. This is done using the setting button then to Export Data. From here you can email yourself the data either in Human readable version or raw JSON version.
Moment is currently only available for iOS users. It requires iOS 9.0 or later & is designed for iPhone, & iPad. It also offers Apple Watch app for iPhone. It is developed by Kevin Holesh & is located in Pittsburgh, USA.
