At Microsoft 365 Developer Day: Dual-screen experiences, the IT major showed attendees its vision for creating apps for dual (smart) screens. Microsoft has created a device experience that gives users the option to benefit from a larger screen, & have 2 defined screens to get more out of a single device.

Microsoft also shared how smartphone apps will work, & how developers can optimize for three dual-screen patterns while building apps for Windows, Android, or the Web.

Building Web apps for dual-screen devices

To empower Web developers to build a “great” dual-screen experience, for Website or Web app, Microsoft has proposed a new JavaScript API & a CSS media query with a set of pre-defined env() variables. Microsoft is also working with the Second-screen and CSS Working Groups at the W3C, & as the standards process progresses, it intends to contribute to implementation to Chromium. The goal, said Microsoft, to enable developers to build interoperable dual-screen experiences across browsers & operating systems.

Microsoft has also introduced features in the Microsoft Edge DevTools which allows developers to simulate & remotely debug dual-screen devices from Microsoft Edge on the desktop. It will add these to the DevTools in preview builds of Microsoft Edge soon.

Microsoft said this was “just the beginning” for creating enhanced experiences for dual-screen devices.  For more on this, click here.
