Google’s new attempt at “helping” businesses – verified SMS – News

From search to smartphone OS to chat to social media, Google has done it all. Now, it seems to want to go back to the basics – short message service, SMS as we know it.

It’s launched “Verified SMS” in many countries to help businesses get over the problem of “phishing” text messages.

Google said on its official blog about Google Verified SMS service:

This will help you confirm the true identity of the business that’s texting you. The feature works by verifying, on a per-message basis, that content is sent by a specific business. When a message is verified—which is done without sending your messages to Google—you’ll see the business name and logo as well as a verification badge in the message thread.

Verified SMS is rolling out gradually on Messages in 9 countries, starting in the US, India, Mexico, Brazil, the U.K., France, Philippines, Spain & Canada.

Real-time spam detection

In addition to verifying the businesses sending you messages, Google has also rolled out spam protection for Messages. With this, it will warn users of suspected spam & unsafe Websites.

Users can help Google improve its spam models by letting it know if it’s spam or not. They can also report spam texts in Messages at anytime, & block the conversation to stop getting any more messages.
