Google to shutter smart messaging app ‘Allo’ in March 2019 – Company announcement

Google has announced it will be stopping support to messaging app ‘Allo’ to focus on Messages. This came as part of its update on its on-going efforts on its communication tools like Allo, Duo & Hangouts.

Google had already paused further investment in Allo in March this year. It had brought some of its most-loved features like Smart Reply, GIFs & desktop support into Messages.

“Given Messages’ continued momentum, we’ve decided to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages,” said Matt Klainer, Vice President, Consumer Communication Products.

Google has partnerships with over 40 carriers & device makers, & over 175 million users were using Messages, its messaging app for Android phones, every month. Google Allo had been built in parallel “to help you get more done in your chats & express yourself more easily.” But, obviously, with Messages rising popularity, Google has decided to side with it.

Allo will continue to work through March 2019. Until then, users will be able to export all of their existing conversation history from the app — here are instructions.
