Day 1 of Facebook’s F8 event sees a rash of announcements including “Secret Crush” – News

Facebook F8

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg opened the two-day F8 annual developer conference with a keynote on how FB was building a “more privacy-focused social platform” that will give people spaces where they can express themselves freely & feel connected to the people and communities that matter most.

Among the many product tweaks & new launches was the announcement that Facebook Dating was launching in 14 more countries.  It’s currently available in Colombia, Thailand, Canada, Argentina, & Mexico, & was now expanding to 14 new countries: Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guyana, & Suriname.

FB also announced a feature called “Secret Crush”. This was based on feedback that users believed there was an “opportunity to explore potential romantic relationships within their own extended circle of friends.” So now, if a user selects Secret Crush, he/she can select up to nine Facebook friends who he/she wants to express interest in.

Here’s how it will work:

If your crush has opted into Facebook Dating, they will get a notification saying that someone has a crush on them. If your crush adds you to their Secret Crush list, it’s a match. If your crush isn’t on Dating, doesn’t create a Secret Crush list, or doesn’t put you on their list, no one will know that you’ve entered a friend’s name.
