You can be tracked when in private browsing

Incognito/private windows only hide local traces. Remote tracking, fingerprinting, GPU leaks, dodgy networks and malware can still identify you — here’s how to reduce risk.

Private or incognito windows do one simple thing well: they stop your browser storing local history, cookies and form data when you close the window. They’re handy for sharing a computer, testing a site, or hiding a quick search from anyone with access to your device.

They are not a silver bullet. Lots of techniques and mistakes can defeat private browsing and leave a trail — sometimes without you knowing. Below are the common ways private mode can fail and what you can do about each.

How private browsing can leak

GPU memory reuse: Researchers have shown that graphics hardware and drivers can reuse memory buffers without clearing their contents. If an incognito page rendered something on screen and that framebuffer later gets reassigned to another app or game, remnants of the old page can reappear. This is a hardware/driver-level issue, not a flaw in the browser UI, and it illustrates that data can persist outside the browser’s normal storage.

Canvas fingerprinting: Web pages can use the HTML5 Canvas API (and related rendering operations) to create tiny, invisible images or text and measure how they’re drawn. Those measurements depend on your device’s GPU, font set, drivers and browser, producing a fingerprint that can be surprisingly stable and help track you across sessions, even in private windows.

Man-in-the-middle (MITM) interception: Private mode stops your browser from saving things locally, but it doesn’t encrypt your traffic by itself. On the same open Wi‑Fi network, or if someone controls a node between you and the website, they can capture or tamper with unencrypted traffic. Rogue hotspots that mimic legitimate networks are a common way attackers perform MITM attacks.

Malware and extensions: If your machine is infected with malware, or you’ve enabled an extension to run in private windows, that software can log activity regardless of browser history settings. Keyloggers, network monitors and malicious or over‑privileged extensions are particularly effective at bypassing private mode.

Practical ways to reduce the risk

- Treat private/incognito as local privacy only: it wipes history and cookies from your machine when you close the window, but does not make you anonymous online.

- Use HTTPS and browser features that enforce secure connections. Modern browsers include options to prefer or force HTTPS; this helps prevent simple eavesdropping on open networks.

- Consider a trusted VPN on untrusted networks. A VPN encrypts traffic between you and the VPN server, protecting you from local snooping on the same Wi‑Fi, though it doesn’t prevent fingerprinting.

- Reduce fingerprintability: block or limit scripts (using content blockers or script‑control tools), and use browser privacy settings or privacy-focused browsers that harden fingerprinting surfaces. Note that disabling JavaScript will break many sites.

- Audit extensions and permissions: disable or remove extensions you don’t trust, and don’t enable extensions in private windows unless you understand what they do.

- Keep your system and drivers updated and use reputable antivirus/anti‑malware tools. If you suspect compromise, a clean reinstall is the safest option.

Private browsing is useful and convenient, but know its limits. If you need anonymity or strong protection from tracking, combine stronger tools (privacy-focused browsers, VPNs, careful script control) and assume your device and network are the weak links to defend.
