Web app ‘Bookmark OS’ helps organize your bookmarks

BookmarkOS

The more you browse the Internet, the more bookmarks you accumulate, but over time your bookmark manager turns into a bookmark quagmire, the Sites get sucked up never to be found again. This Web app creates an Online desktop for you that lets you organize, sort & browse your bookmarks from any browser & any device.  It works like any desktop file explorer, including drag & drop, a list view with the ability to sort & a search feature.

With Bookmark OS you are given a familiar interface for organizing bookmarks, similar to the way you organize files on your computer with a desktop OS like Windows.  It’s much easier to find a bookmark by visualizing where it is on the file tree versus having to guess with search or tags, which is the way you would normally do it from your browser’s bookmark manager, or with competing products like Delicious. It contributes to an easier, more fluid browsing experience.

Examples of how this app can be of use would be as follows: Can’t locate a bookmark you opened last week? Click ‘view all’ & sort by last opened. Or you might remember a bookmark’s site but don’t know the exact name, then sort by domain. By sorting, just as you have available in your desktop OS, you have new & powerful ways of organizing your bookmarks.

Other interesting features are also available (from the product website):

  • Easily create bookmarks with the bookmarklet
  • Import your bookmarks from any service
  • Importing finds dead links and marks them with a caution icon
  • Custom sorting allows you to re-arrange a folder’s order
  • Drag and drop supports moving multiple items at a time
  • An ‘undo’ action is available for any unwanted moves

Bookmark OS was created by Seattle, Washington-based Web developer Dave Lynam. Dave created this app to scratch his own itch, as an avid Web surfer & having amassed large quantities of bookmarks over the years, he decided to code the app & put it out there for the community to enjoy.

The basic app is free & includes basic functionality like unlimited bookmarks, screenshot icons, search, view all & imports. If you want additional features, like sorting, list view, imported screenshot icons & find dead links in imports, you’ll need the ‘pro plan’, which can be had for US $6, for a 1 time payment.
