Open source encrypted email service Tutanota is getting major traction, say founders

In July this year, What’s New On The Net had written about open source, encrypted mail service from Germany,  Tutanota.  There are some updates on the front of this startup now.

Team Tutanota now tells us it had released a premium version with some more exclusive features a few days ago, & after only 3 days, the startup had reached break-even point. This, said Matthias Pfau, Co-Founder and Developer, was “proof that people care for privacy & prefer to pay for a service that takes their right to privacy seriously.”

The Tutanota mailbox claims to be completely encrypted so that no one – not even those running Tutanota – can spy on the users’ private communication. In addition, Tutanota allows users to send end-to-end encrypted emails to anybody in the world.

In a statement to us, Tutanota said: We are very happy that our users backed our open source project to such an extent. We are overwhelmed by the success of our premium features. Implementing them was a big deal to us, also because the implementation process was very complicated and took us about a month longer than expected. Most importantly, however, Tutanota Premium, makes us more independent. We can continue devoting our time to Tutanota and improve it continuously. This is a huge step for every start-up, in particular for a privacy-focused start-up like ours. We never intended on taking money from typical venture capital companies and giving up shares and influence to them. Now our users show us that we don’t need to.

Everyone upgrading to premium immediately will get an extra of 5 GB storage at no additional cost. This special offer is available until mid of August.

With Tutanota Premium, users can:

·         Add users (unlimited)

·         Get 5 GB extra storage (limited special offer; normally only 1 GB)

·         Get 5 aliases per user

·         Use your own domain or a Tutanota domain

“We would also like to point out that Premium will always be an add-on to our free encrypted email service. With Tutanota, we want that encryption becomes mainstream and that everybody in the world is able to use it, thus, taking part in our battle for privacy. This is why Tutanota will remain forever free. Only if users need extra features like using their own domain or having several aliases, they can pay for it. What excites us the most is that many people simply upgrade just to support our privacy-focused open source project. Even if we repeat ourselves, we have to say: Our users are amazing,” says Arne Möhle, Co-Founder & Developer.
