US-based Docker Inc. recently announced the launch of Docker Store pvt beta.
The store will be a marketplace for validated ‘dockerized’ software. These developers have built the store due to Docker Hub’s popularity for community software Content. Docker Hub is a Cloud-based registry service, also developed by Docker Inc.
For those who don’t know, a Docker is a container that wraps a piece of software in a complete filesystem that contains everything needed to run: code, runtime, system tools, system libraries – anything that can be installed on a server. This guarantees that the software will always run the same, regardless of its environment.
The pvt beta announcement was made in a blog post. Some of the objectives these guys are aiming at with this store include:
- To enable independent software vendors publish & distribute their trusted & enterprise-ready Content.
- To ensure that enterprise users have secure & easy access to software that is compliant & commercially supported. Also ensure that this software is packaged as Docker images & is from verified publishers.
- To provide a publishing process that will help validate software quality. It will involve: security scanning, component inventory & an open source license usage.
Docker Inc. claims that Docker store also make it easy to search, browse & provide information for the available software. Those wishing to download Content to build their applications also find this platform useful. With featured images, databases, base images, programming languages & messaging services, this store promises to be a perfect place for app builders.
You can sign up for an account at store.docker.com. If you sign up as a publisher, you will be able to connect with other developers. Your software will also be easily distributed to the environment. Docker also simplifies your process of software upgrade & update as well as notify your customers.
Over the past few years, demand & usage of Docker Content has increased. They have about 460k dockerized apps. Also, they have more than 4 billion image pulls, with 1.5 billion of those being from January this year. Docker has built this store to cater for the need of more Content.
