Here’s what to expect from Apple’s WWDC 2016

appledevconf16logoOn June 13, Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) begins in San Francisco, on the US West Coast, with company CEO Tim Cook slated to deliver Monday’s keynote address. Apple’s head honcho will tell developers, the press & anyone willing to tune in to the conference live stream, all about the new stuff Apple is working on releasing in the coming days & months.

In the days leading up to the conference quite a bit of speculation regarding possible Apple announcements have made the rounds in specialized press & blogs as well as in rumor mills all over the Web. What most folks in the know concur in is that new iPhone or iPad models will not be presented. The conference will be heavily centered on new software announcements.

1 of the most likely announcements which will probably be made is the change in name of OS X, the venerable Macintosh operating system, that will now be called ‘macOS’, which will also come equipped with Apple’s talking mobile digital assistant, Siri & have a greater degree of integration with its mobile iOS platform. In fact, it’s believed that Apple will open up the Siri SDK to 3rd parties, so that developers will be able to add the ability to interact with their apps through voice commands & chatting, & that Apple itself may be preparing a competitor to take on Amazon Echo & Google Home.

Meanwhile, iOS 10 might be announced, although it will most likely not be available until the fall of 2016, when it’s widely believed that the new iPhone 7 will make its initial appearance. The new iOS version will likely get a big UI makeover, its 1st one in 3 years, since iOS 7. Rumored changes are: iOS 10 could get big improvements to notifications, the ability to delete stock apps & a ‘dark’ mode, which will allow users to substitute the iconic Apple white toned look for dark gray.

Other expected announcements:

  • Availability of Apple Pay on the Web
  • Upgrade to Apple Music & possibly to iTunes, both of which have clunky interfaces
  • New versions of watchOS & tvOS

If you want to attend the conference, you might have a difficult time finding the highly sought after & heftily priced tickets, which go for US $1599. As we mentioned, you can watch the major goings on from the live stream online from the official Conference site here. The keynote will be on Monday at 10AM Pacific Time from the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco. Here’s the rest of the schedule.
