Blackbox is a Chrome extension that makes it easy to copy on-screen text from videos

Blackbox is a Chrome extension that uses OCR to let you select and copy text from videos, images, screenshots and screen shares.

If you've ever paused a tutorial to type out a line of code, or squinted at a webinar slide trying to copy a URL, Blackbox aims to save you the effort. It's a Chrome extension that uses OCR (optical character recognition) to let you select text from anywhere on your screen — including inside videos, images and screen shares — and copy it straight to your clipboard.

How it works

Once installed, Blackbox adds a small tool you can trigger inside the browser. You draw a box around the area containing the text you want, the extension runs OCR on that selection and presents the recognised text for copying. Because it works on rasterised pixels rather than page source, it can extract text from places regular copy-paste can’t reach: embedded video frames, instructor slides shown in a meeting, screenshots, and so on.

That makes it particularly handy for a few common tasks: pulling code snippets from video tutorials, grabbing URLs or reference text from recorded webinars, copying chat messages shown in a screen share, or rescuing text from screenshots and images where the original file isn’t available. Once the text is copied you can paste it into your editor, notes app or wherever you want.

Practical tips and limits

OCR is useful, but it isn’t perfect. For best results: pause videos before you capture, zoom in or switch to a higher-resolution view where possible, and make sure the text is clear and not obscured. High contrast between text and background helps recognition; ornate or stylised fonts, low resolution, and motion blur will increase errors.

If you’re copying code, expect to check a few characters — punctuation, indentation and similar-looking symbols (like l, 1, I, |) are common OCR trouble spots. Treat the result as a time‑saving first draft rather than a guaranteed exact copy.

Privacy and permissions are worth checking. An extension that reads pixels on the page needs access to the content you select, so review the extension’s permissions and privacy policy before using it on sensitive material.

Blackbox is simple in concept and can be a genuine time-saver when you need text that can’t be reached by ordinary copy-paste. It won’t replace typing and proofreading entirely, but for grabbing quick snippets from video tutorials, slides and screenshots it can speed the workflow and reduce the frustration of retyping long blocks of text.
